UK Ancestry Visa for South Africans

Dive deep into your roots, and you might find a bridge to the UK. The Ancestry Visa provides a unique pathway for those with a UK grandparent to live, work, and settle in the UK. Understanding your birth rights can be the key to unlocking vast opportunities in the United Kingdom.

According to the UK government website, South African citizens with at least one grandparent born in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man may be eligible for a UK Ancestry visa. This visa allows Commonwealth citizens to live and work in the UK for up to 5 years, with the possibility to extend the visa or apply for indefinite leave to remain.

Financial Requirements and Proof

To meet the financial requirements for a UK Ancestry visa, you must have enough money to support yourself and any dependents without relying on public funds. There is no set amount of funds required, but you will need to provide evidence such as recent bank statements dated within 31 days of your application that demonstrate your ability to cover your expenses in the UK.

Alternatively, you can provide credible evidence of financial support from a relative or friend, such as a letter promising to cover your costs. The Home Office will assess your financial situation based on the evidence you submit to determine if you meet this requirement.

Healthcare Surcharge and NHS Access

When applying for a UK Ancestry visa, you will need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of your application. The IHS allows you to access the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) once your visa is granted. As of 2023, the IHS costs £624 per year for each applicant. For a 5-year Ancestry visa, you would need to pay £3,120 upfront to cover the IHS for the full visa duration.

For any dependents joining you on your Ancestry visa, the IHS fee is also £624 per year for adults and £470 per year for children under 18. Over the 5-year visa period, the total IHS for an adult dependent would be £3,120 and £2,350 for a child under 18.

Once you have paid the IHS and your Ancestry visa is granted, you will be able to access NHS services, although you may still need to pay for certain services like prescriptions, dental treatment and eye tests. To prove your entitlement to NHS care, you should present your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) when accessing healthcare services in the UK.
